AI Visibility Tracking
Session 10.6 · ~5 min read
AI visibility is the newest metric in entity infrastructure and the hardest to track. There is no API for "does ChatGPT know about my company." There is no dashboard showing your Perplexity citation count. Manual testing across multiple platforms is currently the minimum viable approach, though dedicated tools are emerging rapidly.
Why AI Visibility Matters
AI search queries grew 527% year-over-year between early 2024 and early 2025. AI-generated summaries now appear in over 20% of Google searches. The trajectory is clear: an increasing share of how people discover businesses will be mediated by AI systems. If those systems do not know your entity exists, you are invisible to a growing segment of searchers.
AI visibility is a leading indicator of future search visibility. The businesses that appear in AI answers today are building brand recognition that converts into branded searches tomorrow.
The Manual Testing Protocol
Until automated tools mature, manual testing across three platforms is the baseline measurement approach.
| Platform | Test Method | What to Record |
|---|---|---|
| Google Gemini / AI Overviews | Search target queries in Google, check for AI Overview | Whether your entity is mentioned, what information is shown, source link |
| ChatGPT | Ask about your company by name, ask industry queries | Whether your entity is mentioned, accuracy of information, sources cited |
| Perplexity | Search for company name and industry queries | Whether your entity is cited, which URLs are referenced, answer accuracy |
Query Types to Test
Test four categories of queries across all three platforms:
Test Matrix"] --> Q1["Direct entity queries
'Tell me about [company name]'"] TEST --> Q2["Industry queries
'Best [service] companies in [city]'"] TEST --> Q3["Product queries
'[specific product] supplier'"] TEST --> Q4["Location queries
'[service] near [area]'"] Q1 --> R1["Measures: does AI know
your entity?"] Q2 --> R2["Measures: are you cited
for industry searches?"] Q3 --> R3["Measures: are you associated
with specific products?"] Q4 --> R4["Measures: does AI know
your location?"] style TEST fill:#2a2a28,stroke:#c8a882,color:#ede9e3
Run at least five queries per category. Vary the phrasing. AI responses are not deterministic. The same query asked three times may produce different results. Test multiple times over multiple days to get a representative picture.
The AI Visibility Tracker
Create a spreadsheet with these columns:
| Column | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Date | When the test was run |
| Platform | Which AI tool (Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity) |
| Query | Exact question asked |
| Mentioned (Y/N) | Was your entity mentioned in the response? |
| Accuracy | Was the information about you correct? |
| Source cited | What URL or source did the AI reference? |
| Notes | Competitors mentioned, context of mention |
Run this tracker monthly at minimum. Weekly during active entity infrastructure building. The goal is to detect trends: are you appearing more frequently over time? Are the citations accurate? Are specific platforms citing you that were not before?
Automated AI Visibility Tools
Several tools have launched to automate AI visibility tracking:
- Semrush AI Visibility Checker: Free tool that scores your brand's presence across AI platforms on a 0 to 100 scale.
- Otterly.ai: Monitors citations across six AI platforms with competitive benchmarking and alerts.
- Peec AI: Founded in 2025, monitors brand visibility and sentiment across major AI search engines.
- Surfer AI Tracker: Launched July 2025, monitors brand mentions across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity with weekly trend reports.
These tools are maturing quickly. By the time you read this, more options may exist. The key capability to look for: cross-platform monitoring, historical trend data, and competitive comparison.
Interpreting Results
Expect slow improvement. AI visibility changes lag behind entity infrastructure changes by weeks to months. Perplexity reflects changes fastest (within days, since it searches the live web). ChatGPT is slowest (training data updates happen infrequently). Google AI Overviews fall in between.
If you have been building entity infrastructure for two to three months and see no improvement in AI mentions, check: Is your content accessible to AI crawlers (not JavaScript-dependent)? Is your schema valid and generating rich results? Are your citations consistent? These are the most common blockers.
